Gallery Application Guides
Elastic Residence is an independent, artist-run project space that provides
exhibition opportunities and support for artists outside the confines
of a commercial or institutional framework. The programme reflects the
diversity in current contemporary visual art practice with a strong emphasis
on durational performance. The aim of the gallery is for artists to present
their work in an unconventional setting to a wide audience within a supportive
atmosphere.
Elastic does not receive any core funding for it’s exhibition programme,
therefore, the cost of making and presenting the work must be met by the
artist/curator, as do some of the exhibition expenses. Help and advice
is available for pursuing various funding options.
Elastic is a non profit-making exhibition space. Work is not for sale
publicly, except by private agreement.
In order to present professional exhibitions without overburdening the
limited resources of either the artist/curator or Elastic, exhibiting
artists are invited into a partnership with the gallery whereby in lieu
of hire charges for the space and high commission fees, the artist/curator
is required to be responsible for certain duties prior to and throughout
the duration of the exhibition. The Partnership
The artist/curator is responsible
for:
- All costs involved in the making and presentation of artworks.
- The installation (and subsequent removal) of the exhibition is the responsibility
of the artist/curator. Elastic Residence is able to offer technical support
by way of advice and some assistance.
- The design, production and cost of producing private view invitation
cards is the responsibility of the artist/curator.
-The artist/curator to supply a up to 10 tiff files of an image which
will be sent out by the gallery to the press with information about the
exhibition and can be used for e-mail and website promotion.
The gallery is responsible for:
-The production of publicity material, which will be sent to art journals,
local/national press and freelance writers. The gallery will endeavour
to obtain inclusion of the exhibition in free listings columns in the
art press and local/national press. Due to funding limitations any pay
for advertising must be placed and paid for by the artist/curator
-The gallery will undertake the emailing of press releases to all supporters
of Elastic, professional bodies and other galleries.
- Invigilation of weekend opening hours. The artist/curator and gallery
will share the responsibility for:
-Private View. This will be overseen by the gallery in line with the artist/curator’s
requirements. Usually the gallery runs a free bar with drinks provided
by sponsorship or the artist/curator. If this is not available, a pay
bar will be organized by the gallery.
-Education activities by way of practical workshops and gallery talks/seminars
are encouraged as important aspect of Elastic’s activity. Artists/curators
are obliged to deliver one talk/lead a workshop session as part of the
exhibition agreement. This is decided in negotiation with the gallery
who will organize the event.
Artists/curators may also be invited to be involved in additional paid
education work (where funding permits).
Ideas for education projects to concur with the exhibition are welcome.
We currently have a room available which may be used for education workshops.
